Infusion guidance

Practicing aseptic technique1-4

Help patients reduce the risk of skin infections by reminding them about the following steps they should take to help avoid contaminating the infusion site.

WASH

Use soap and water to thoroughly scrub both hands—including under the nails—for 20 seconds. Wash the area on and around the infusion site and dry with a clean paper towel.

WIPE

Using an alcohol pad, wipe the infusion site in an outward spiral (not back and forth) to avoid sweeping bacteria back into the site.

WAIT

Do not blow on the infusion site. Instead, let it air-dry for at least 60 seconds so that the tape on the cannula sticks to the skin properly.

Choosing and rotating the infusion site1,3,4

The abdomen is the preferred area for the infusion site.

Insert the cannula greater than or equal to 2 inches away from the navel.

Insert the cannula at least 2 inches away from the navel.

Insert the cannula greater than or equal to 1 inch away from previous infusion site.

Choose an area that is at least

1 inch from the previous site.

Insert the cannula in different infusion site spots that follow a similar pattern.

Consider using a pattern when rotating the site.

Additional reminders

Rotate the site and use a new infusion set (tubing and cannula) at least every 3 days. Consider rotating the infusion site more frequently than every third day (eg, daily or every other day) if the patient experiences signs of infection. New sites should be 1 inch away from sites used within the last 12 days.

Keep at least 2 inches away from skin that has scarred or hardened tissue, stretch marks, skin folds or creases where the body naturally bends (eg, while sitting or exercising), or where clothing might cause irritation (eg, near the beltline). VYALEV should not be infused into areas where the site is tender, bruised, red, or hard to the touch.
